Performance Plan Task

Managers will be assigned the Performance Planning Task and a notification email will be sent automatically from Carolina Talent. Managers have 60 days to complete [PLACEHOLDER FOR POLICY].

  • Managers can launch the task from the Carolina Talent email or directly within Carolina Talent’s Homepage ‘Pending Performance Document Task’ menu.

  • To launch the task, click on the Performance document task name.

  • Goals created in the Performance Plan task will not be visible to the employee or in the Goals menu until the employee acknowledges the plan.

  • Use the Goals menu (Performance > Goals) if you need to make the goals visible to the employee right away, collaborate on goals, set team goals or copy/advance previously entered goals.

  • If Goals are not created in the Performance Plan task, the task status will remain incomplete.


Performance Plan: Manager Step

Manager Step: Overview Section

The first step is the Overview section - this section provides specific details for the task as well as the ‘Review Step Progression’.

  • Click Get Started to begin.

Manager Step: Institutional Goals - Read-Only

Institutional goals are Read-Only. Employees will be rated on the institutional goals during their annual review.

  • Click Save and Continue.

Manager Step: Individual Goals

Employees are required to have 3 - 5 individual goals for each performance cycle.

How to add new goals in the Performance Plan

  1. To add new goals, click the Add Goals button.

  2. The Create Goals page will launch to add an individual goal. Please refer to the How to Create Goals page for additional help in creating goals.

  3. Click Save to return to the Performance Plan draft.

Repeat steps 1 - 3 to add additional goals.

How to edit and/or cancel previous goals in the Performance Plan

Follow the steps below for employees who have transferred from another job and have previous goals in the Performance Plan task.

  • You have the option to Edit the current goal’s title, details and weights without recording the goal as canceled. Select Edit to start making these edits.

  • To cancel the goal and change the goals status to Cancelled, click on the Cancel Goal button.

  • Goals cannot be deleted permanently. You can only cancel goals to void them from your plan.

  • Canceled goals will have a yellow banner stating they are cancelled.

Manager Step: Development Plan

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill champions lifelong learning and development.  All employees are required to have a Development Plan and at least one objective and development activity.  These activities must be aligned with the employee’s current position or towards a future position.  If an employee has received any rating of Not Meeting Expectations on their previous performance appraisal, the Development Plan must be used to correct the deficiencies listed in that review.

  • To start, click on Add Objective

  • The Add/Edit Objective window will launch. Type the Objective Title and click Save.

  • Next, click on the drop-down button, to Add Training or/an Action Step.

  • To Add Training from Carolina Talent Learning, select Add Training.

  • Click Add Action Step to add the Action Step Title and Due Date.

  • Finally, you will need to acknowledge the Performance Plan

Performance Plan: Employee Acknowledgement

Once the manager electronically signs and submits the Performance Plan, the employee receives an email notification from Carolina Talent notifying them the task is ready for their review. Employees have 15 days from the date the task is assigned to acknowledge the Performance Plan.

  • Employee steps are optional and will move on if not completed by the due date.

  • Employees can launch the task from the Carolina Talent email or directly within Carolina Talent’s Homepage ‘Pending Performance Document Task’ menu.

  • To launch the task, click on the Performance document task name.

  • The Performance Plan task will launch and the Overview section with instructions will populate, click on Get Started to begin reviewing your Performance Plan.

  • First, review the Institutional Goals, click Save and Continue to proceed to the next section.

  • Review the Individual Goals section, click Save and Continue to proceed to the next section. Please note individual goals in the Performance Plan can only be edited by your manager. Talk to your manager immediately to make any updates in the Performance Plan before proceeding.

  • Review the Development Plan details, click Save and Continue to proceed to the final step.

  • The final step is to digitally sign the Performance Plan. To complete the Signature section, select from the Employee acknowledgement options and click Sign.

  • Finally, click Submit to finalize your Performance Plan Employee Acknowledgement step.
